Description

Flan de Queso is a traditional Puerto Rican dessert that is creamy, sweet, and tangy. It's a smooth custard dessert that is made with cream cheese, eggs, condensed milk, evaporated milk, sugar, and vanilla. It is similar to a cheesecake but with a smoother texture and is often served with a caramel sauce. It's a perfect dessert to serve for special occasions or when you want to impress your guests.

Prep Time

Preparation time for Flan de Queso is around 15-20 minutes.

Cook Time

Cooking time is approximately 45-50 minutes, plus cooling time.

Ingredients

  • 1 cup sugar
  • 1 package (8 oz) cream cheese, softened
  • 4 eggs
  • 1 can (14 oz) sweetened condensed milk
  • 1 can (12 oz) evaporated milk
  • 1 teaspoon vanilla extract

Equipment

  • 9-inch cake pan
  • Bowl
  • Mixer
  • Saucepan
  • Whisk

Method

  1. Preheat the oven to 350°F.
  2. In a saucepan, melt the sugar over medium heat until it turns into a caramel sauce. Pour the sauce into the cake pan, spreading it evenly over the bottom of the pan.
  3. In a bowl, beat the cream cheese with a mixer until it is creamy. Add the eggs one at a time, beating well after each addition.
  4. Add the condensed milk, evaporated milk, and vanilla extract to the cream cheese mixture. Whisk until everything is well combined.
  5. Pour the mixture into the cake pan over the caramel sauce.
  6. Place the cake pan into a larger baking dish and fill the larger dish with enough water to reach halfway up the sides of the cake pan.
  7. Bake for 45-50 minutes, or until a toothpick inserted into the center of the flan comes out clean.
  8. Remove the cake pan from the water bath and let it cool down.
  9. Cover the cake pan with plastic wrap and chill it in the refrigerator for at least 2 hours, or overnight.
  10. When ready to serve, run a knife around the edges of the flan and then invert it onto a plate. The caramel sauce will be on top.

Notes

Flan de Queso can be served with whipped cream or fresh fruit as a garnish. If you don't want to make your own caramel sauce, you can use store-bought caramel sauce. To make the flan creamier, you can add an extra egg or replace the evaporated milk with heavy cream.

Recipe Tips

To prevent the flan from sticking to the pan, make sure to coat the pan with the caramel sauce before pouring the mixture into it. When baking the flan, make sure to place the cake pan into a larger baking dish filled with water. This will help the flan cook evenly and prevent it from cracking. When inverting the flan onto a plate, make sure to do it carefully so that the caramel sauce doesn't spill. Let the flan chill in the refrigerator for at least 2 hours, or overnight, to set and allow the flavors to develop.
