Method
Step 1: Soaking

Drain the water from the soaked rice and black gram. Grind them separately in a blender or grinder to make a smooth paste. Add water as required to get a smooth consistency.Step 3: Fermentation
Mix the rice and black gram paste in a large mixing bowl. Add salt to taste and mix well. Keep the batter in a warm place for 3-4 hours or until it ferments and becomes fluffy.Step 4: Steaming
Grease the idli plates with oil or ghee. Pour the batter into the idli plates, filling them up to ¾ of the capacity. Steam the idlis in an idli steamer or pressure cooker for 10-12 minutes on high flame.Step 5: Serving
Once the idlis are steamed, remove them from the steamer and let them cool down for a minute or two. Serve hot with coconut chutney or sambar.Notes
