Description

Wontons are a delicious Chinese dish that can be enjoyed as an appetizer or a main course. However, if you have a gluten allergy or intolerance, you may have trouble finding wonton wrappers that are suitable for your needs. That's where this rice flour wonton wrapper recipe comes in. Made with just a few simple ingredients, these wrappers are easy to make and are the perfect substitute for traditional wheat-based wonton wrappers.

Prep Time

Preparation for this recipe takes approximately 30 minutes.

Cook Time

Cooking the wonton wrappers takes approximately 2-3 minutes.

Ingredients

  • 1 cup rice flour
  • 1/4 tsp salt
  • 1/2 cup hot water
  • 1 tbsp tapioca starch (optional)

Equipment

  • Rolling pin
  • Plastic wrap
  • Large pot of boiling water
  • Slotted spoon

Method

  1. In a large mixing bowl, combine the rice flour and salt. Mix well.
  2. Add the hot water to the bowl and stir until a dough forms. If the dough is too dry, add a little more water. If the dough is too wet, add a little more rice flour.
  3. Dust a clean work surface with rice flour. Knead the dough for a few minutes until it becomes smooth and elastic.
  4. If the dough is too sticky, add some tapioca starch to the dough and knead again until smooth.
  5. Divide the dough in half and cover one half with plastic wrap to prevent it from drying out.
  6. Roll out the other half of the dough into a thin sheet, about 1/16 inch thick.
  7. Cut the sheet into small squares, about 2 inches in size.
  8. Place a small spoonful of filling in the center of each square.
  9. Moisten the edges of the square with a little water and fold it over into a triangle shape.
  10. Press the edges together to seal the wonton.
  11. Repeat with the remaining dough and filling.
  12. Bring a large pot of water to a boil.
  13. Add the wontons to the boiling water, one at a time, and cook for 2-3 minutes or until they float to the surface.
  14. Remove the wontons with a slotted spoon and transfer them to a plate.
  15. Serve hot with your favorite dipping sauce.

Notes

  • If you don't have tapioca starch, you can use cornstarch instead.
  • Feel free to experiment with different fillings for your wontons, such as ground pork, shrimp, or vegetables.
  • Make sure to seal the wontons tightly so that the filling doesn't leak out during cooking.

Recipe Tips

  • Make sure to use hot water when making the dough, as this will help the rice flour to bind together properly.
  • Don't roll the dough too thin, as this can cause the wonton wrappers to tear during cooking.
  • Use a slotted spoon to remove the wontons from the boiling water, as this will help to drain off any excess water.
  • Store any leftover wonton wrappers in an airtight container in the refrigerator for up to 3 days.

Enjoy your homemade rice flour wonton wrappers!
