Ingredients

  • 1 cup Basmati rice
  • 2 tbsp ghee or oil
  • 1 tsp cumin seeds
  • 1 onion, chopped
  • 1 tomato, chopped
  • 1 green chilli, chopped
  • 1 tsp ginger-garlic paste
  • 1 tsp coriander powder
  • 1/2 tsp cumin powder
  • 1/2 tsp turmeric powder
  • 1/4 tsp red chilli powder
  • Salt to taste
  • 2 cups water
  • 2 tbsp chopped coriander leaves

Equipment

  • Large non-stick pan or pot with a lid
  • Spatula
  • Measuring cups and spoons

Method

  1. Wash the rice in cold water and soak it for 20 minutes.
  2. Heat ghee or oil in a large non-stick pan or pot over medium-high heat.
  3. Once the oil is hot, add cumin seeds and let them splutter.
  4. Add chopped onion and sauté until it turns translucent.
  5. Add chopped tomato, green chilli, and ginger-garlic paste. Sauté for 2-3 minutes.
  6. Add coriander powder, cumin powder, turmeric powder, red chilli powder, and salt. Mix well.
  7. Add soaked rice and sauté for a minute.
  8. Add 2 cups of water and mix well.
  9. Bring the mixture to a boil and then reduce the heat to low. Cover the pan with a lid and let it cook for 15-20 minutes.
  10. Once the rice is cooked, turn off the heat and let it rest for 5 minutes.
  11. Garnish with chopped coriander leaves and serve hot.

Notes

  • You can also add vegetables like peas, carrots, and beans to the dish to make it more nutritious.
  • Make sure to soak the rice for at least 20 minutes to ensure it cooks evenly.
  • You can adjust the spices according to your taste preferences.
