This recipe takes about 20-30 minutes to prepare.

Cook Time

The cooking time for this recipe is about 20 minutes.

Ingredients

For the rice balls:
  • 2 cups of sushi rice
  • 2 cups of water
  • 1/4 cup rice vinegar
  • 1/4 cup sugar
  • 1/4 tsp salt
  • Nori sheets (dried seaweed sheets)
For the filling:
  • Umeboshi (pickled plum)
  • Tuna salad
  • Salmon flakes
  • Cooked and seasoned chicken

Equipment

  • A rice cooker or a pot with a lid
  • A mixing bowl
  • A spoon or spatula
  • A cutting board and knife

Method

  1. Wash the sushi rice until the water runs clear. Drain the rice and add it to a rice cooker or pot with 2 cups of water.
  2. Cook the rice according to the instructions on your rice cooker or pot.
  3. In a mixing bowl, combine the rice vinegar, sugar, and salt. Microwave the mixture for 30 seconds, then stir until the sugar has dissolved.
  4. When the rice is done cooking, transfer it to a large mixing bowl. Add the vinegar mixture to the rice and mix well. Cover the bowl with a damp towel and let it cool for a few minutes.
  5. Prepare the fillings by cutting them into small pieces.
  6. To make the rice balls, wet your hands with water, then grab a handful of rice and shape it into a ball. Make a small indentation in the center of the ball with your thumb.
  7. Add your desired filling to the indentation, then cover it with more rice and shape it into a ball again.
  8. Cut a small strip of nori sheet and wrap it around the rice ball. Repeat the process until all the rice and fillings are used up.
  9. Serve the rice balls immediately or store them in an airtight container in the fridge for later.

  • If you don't have a rice cooker, follow the instructions on the package of your sushi rice for stovetop cooking.
  • You can also use plastic wrap to shape the rice balls if you find it difficult to shape them with your hands.
